THERAPY WITH DR. BRIAN

Hi, I'm Dr. Brian Smith and I am a licensed psychologist and founder of Hopewell Psychological Associates, PC. The name Hopewell reflects a simple belief: that even in difficult seasons, growth, healing, and meaningful change remain possible.
I became a therapist because I believe in the power of healing relationships—first with ourselves, and then with others. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside individuals and couples as they navigate anxiety, trauma, addiction, and relational pain. I know how hard it can be to reach out, and I honor the courage it takes to begin this process.
I’m a licensed psychologist with a trauma-informed, emotionally attuned approach. Much of my work focuses on helping clients understand how early relational wounds continue to shape their sense of self, relationships, and emotional experiences in the present. I believe that true healing involves addressing these deeper roots with compassion and clarity.
At the same time, I recognize the need for practical tools to help manage symptoms in the here and now. I integrate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based strategies to support clients in building emotional regulation, reducing anxiety, and creating space for change—especially in the early stages of therapy. These approaches can bring relief and stability, while we also do the deeper work of healing.
I am also a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT) Candidate under supervision, with experience helping individuals struggling with compulsive sexual behaviors and relational betrayal. My approach to this work is grounded, compassionate, and honest—helping clients better understand the patterns driving these behaviors while developing greater emotional awareness, integrity, accountability, and healthier ways of relating to themselves and others.
I work with men individually and in recovery-focused group therapy, recognizing that healing often requires both honest self-examination and supportive community. I also understand the profound impact these struggles can have on spouses and relationships, including the pain, confusion, and loss of trust that often accompany betrayal trauma. My specialized recovery work is offered through Gathered Embers Counseling & Recovery, a focused practice dedicated to compulsive sexual behavior recovery, relational healing, and faith-oriented restoration.
While I draw from a variety of clinical models—including psychodynamic therapy, attachment theory, parts work, CBT, and mindfulness—what matters most to me is the relationship we build. Clients often describe me as calm, compassionate, and deeply present. I aim to create a space that feels safe enough for honesty, reflection, and meaningful growth.
Whether you’re working through past trauma, navigating anxiety or addiction, or hoping to reconnect in your relationship, you’re welcome here. Healing isn’t linear—but it is possible. And you don’t have to do it alone.
Faith & Therapy
For clients who desire it, Christian faith can also be thoughtfully integrated into the therapy process in a way that is grounded, psychologically informed, and connected to real life rather than pressure or performance. Whether you’re exploring spiritual questions, carrying pain related to faith or church experiences, or simply want your beliefs to be reflected in our work, I offer a space where your faith can be honored and thoughtfully included. My goal is not to impose a particular perspective, but to understand your experience honestly and meet you where you are.
